Certification
All BMW Protection Vehicles are subjected to a comprehensive testing regime and are officially certified on compliance according to the internationally recognised ballistic guidelines for ‘Bullet Resistant Vehicles’ (VPAM BRV 2009 & ERV 2010, Fassung 2). So you can be confident that you are getting the best possible protection.
Protection level
Experience protection on a new level – with the BMW X5 Protection VR6. The armouring of the passenger cell is made out of high-strength steel parts. Combined with the armoured boot divider as standard, it protects against hand- and long guns up to a calibre of 7.62 x 39 mm FeC. Furthermore the joint area is also protected against a calibre of 7.62 x 39 mm SC. Both calibres are used in the most popular weapon, the Kalaschnikow AK-47. Moreover, the armoured passenger cell withstands lateral attacks of up to 12.5 kg PETN, which corresponds to an equivalent of 15 kg TNT, in 4 m distance. Additionally, the optional extended roof protects against fragmentation charges up to 200 g such as the DTG5. An external underbody armour made out of aluminium shields you against shock waves and splinter effects, coming from an attack with DM51 hand grenades (double charge). This underbody armour can be strengthend with fabrics1 to resist an attack with a HG85 hand grenades.
Passenger cell
Latest protection technology, made by BMW: Armour that is perfectely fitted to the standard model’s body shell. Thus the BMW X5 Protection VR6 is hard to distinguish from a standard model – neither from the outside nor from the inside. Our aspiration is of the highest diligence when it comes to overlapping armour in sensitive areas like door joints, chinks or at the transitions of doors and windows. The abbreviation „VR6“ („Vehicle Resistance“), that is part of the model’s name BMW X5 Protection VR6, represents the resistance class, that the special protection vehicle is certified with (VPAM BRV 2009, Edition 2 in the current version). Civil protection vehicles are classified in different resistance classes, ranging from VR1 to VR10. Additonally, this vehicle is certified according to the VPAM ERV 2010, Edition 2 guidelines.
Furthermore, the vehicle includes the so called “Post-Blast-Protection”. This means that all armoured window panes are protected from secondary attacks. The window panes remain in their position when subjected ot explosives. No openings arise between glass and body, that could be used as further points of attack. On top, the Self-Sealing Fuel Tank, that reseals itself after damage, and Underbody Armouring ensure that you’re protected all around.

The risk of armed is a fact of everyday life for certain customers. In particular, attack with automatic weapons like the AK-47. At the same time, more and more people want a sporty, comfortable off-road vehicle. With good driving dynamics and all the versatility these vehicles offer. BMW is the first manufacturer to respond to these two demands and offer a new degree of security. And BMW is the only manufacturer with a vehicle certified to resistance class VR6. This means that the BMW X5 Protection VR6 comes with a high level of mobile safety and offers comfortable space for up to four people.

The interior of the BMW X5 Protection VR6 offers intuitive ease of use and maximum comfort. A raised seating position, a driver-focused cockpit with a large BMW Curved Display and the innovative iDrive system. This also helps make the vehicle safer. Because if you feel at ease and in control of the situation, you will be able to react better to danger.
Colours, leathers, fine-wood trims: with the BMW X5 Protection VR6, you have almost limitless design possibilities. As you would expect, a large number of options from the BMW Individual range are included in these.
The BMW Live Cockpit Plus with BMW Curved Display includes a high-quality display network. It combines a fully digital 12.3" instrument panel with a 14.9" control display that can be operated by touch.
The automatic air conditioning with 4-zone control offers individual air conditioning on the front seats and on the left and right seats in the rear. A nanoparticle filter improves the air quality for both fresh air and recirculating air. The rear passengers can adjust their own climate individually via a separate controller.
The optional comfort seats[1] for driver and front passenger can be electrically adjusted in a variety of ways and provide a perfect seating position for a relaxed arrival.
The massage function[1] for driver and passenger improves the physical wellbeing by stimulating or relaxing the muscles.
The active seat ventilation[1][2] at the front, provides cool and pleasant seat temperatures, resulting in a more comfortable driving experience – even under hot conditions.
The M Leather steering wheel, including multifunction buttons and an integrated driver-side airbag features the three-spoke design. With a steering wheel rim in leather 'Walknappa' black with stitching in sporty M colours and contoured thumb rests, it provides a direct, athletic steering experience.
The BMW X5 Protecion VR6 offers high seating comfort, for four persons, incuding generous leg space. And the divider offers a comfortable sense of space, without compromising the safety.Armour
The security glazing in the BMW X5 Protection VR6 is made of a security glass laminate. The polycarbonate coating on the inside prevents spalling. It offers protection not just against attacks with blunt instruments and handguns, but also against the world’s most widely used firearm, the AK-47.
BMW uses moulded parts in the BMW X5 Protection VR6 which precisely follow the contours of the standard model. This way, all the normal airbags can be incorporated, without the cabin feeling any less spacious.
Sit here, and you know you’re safe: the edges of the doors, the places where windows meet frames and the joins between body panels are some of the most vulnerable areas of the vehicle to gunfire. But in the BMW X5 Protection VR6, these areas are reinforced with steel armour, ensuring that neither bullets nor splinters can penetrate the passenger compartment.Chassis and electronics
The electronic driver aids and suspension settings have been modified to ensure optimum driving dynamics with the extra weight of the armour.
Safety fuel tank
The Self-Sealing Fuel Tank is able to reseal itself after it received damage and it prevents leaking of fuel.
Multi-Layered Safety Glass
Driver and passengers of the BMW X5 Protection VR6 are protected by a 30 mm multi-layerd safety glass, coated with a polycarbonate splinter protection layer.
Additional floor and roof armouring
All-round safety – the standard underbody splinter protection guards you from attacks with DM51 hand grenades. As an option, the underbody splinter guard can also be reinforced against attacks with the hand grenade HG85. An optionally available, stronger armoured roof, made of safety steel and fibre composite materials, offers certified protection against drone attacks with DTG5 fragmentation charges (200 g C4 and over 500 fragmentation bodies) in addition to the ballistic protection, that is installed as standard.
ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT FOR SPECIAL REQUESTS.
Sometimes you need more than just protection. For roles such as carrying dignitaries or security escort duties, a vehicle must have the ability to reveal in seconds that it is on official business in order to get the job done. BMW has been producing Authority Vehicles for over 60 years, working in close cooperation with authorities and government agencies all over the world. Flashing lights, acoustic warning signals with different siren effects, signalling devices, radios, and even flag holders for official use.
Sound sequence signal installation
The special signal equipment[1] includes a detachable rotating beacon, front flashing lights in the kidney grille and a sound sequence signal. All operating elements are pooled at the control unit in front of the gear selector switch.
Rear flash lights
Additional flash lights[1] at the back window warn the rear traffic.
Door panel lowerable, front
The front side window on the driver’s side has an electric power window as quipment. This equipment is also available for the passenger side.
Flag holder for diplomatic
To attach official flags at the car’s left or right side, pennant holders[1] are available.
Soft-Close function
The Soft-Close function pulls the slightly-open door shut automatically and nearly silently.
Adaptive LED-Headlights
Better sight, better visibility, more safety. The adaptive LED headlights with matrix technology automatically adapt to any driving situation. Anti-glare high beam, curve-adaptive headlights and cornering lights provide high visibility even in difficult situations. Visual highlight: Daytime driving lights and turn signals in dynamic arrow shape.
Telephony with wireless charging
Tidy and practical: The wireless charging tray[2]. The extended tray area offers room even for larger devices – within reach and without the inconvenience of covers or cables. For maximum safety, the in-built cooling function protects your device from overheating.

Performance data of petrol engines apply to vehicles using RON 98 fuel. Fuel consumption data apply to vehicles using reference fuels in accordance with EU Regulation 715/2007. Unleaded RON 91 and higher with a maximum ethanol content of 10% (E10) may also be used. BMW recommends RON 95 fuel. For high-performance automobiles, BMW recommends RON 98 fuel.
Official data for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, power consumption and electric range was determined in accordance with the prescribed measuring procedure and corresponds to European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the applicable version. For ranges, data determined as per WLTP takes into account any optional equipment (available on the German market in this case). For vehicles that have been newly type approved since 1 January 2021, only the official data according to WLTP exists. In addition, NEDC values are deleted from the certificates of conformity as of 1 January 2023 by EC regulation 2022/195.
